Why deferred maintenance is expensive maintenance

A missed inspection or a service pushed out "for a few more weeks" rarely shows up as a cost on its own. It shows up later — a more serious repair, unplanned downtime, an accelerated failure of a related component.

The maintenance budget doesn't disappear when a service is deferred. It moves further down the road, and usually grows on the way.

This is also where driver behaviour and maintenance intersect: a driver who brakes harshly and accelerates aggressively wears brakes, tyres and the drivetrain faster than a fixed schedule assumes — feeding directly into cost-per-vehicle analysis and the monthly report.

Reactive maintenance responds after a vehicle has already failed — typically the most expensive and disruptive way to maintain a fleet. Preventative maintenance follows a schedule based on distance, time or engine hours, aiming to catch a fault before it becomes a failure.
Why can cheap maintenance become expensive?
A lower-cost repair using substandard parts, or performed by an unqualified supplier, can lead to a repeat failure or a more serious issue down the line. The cheapest invoice isn't always the cheapest outcome once repeat visits and downtime are accounted for.
